59ab what coil to use without ballast resistor

The Bosch Blackness Curlicue (fabricated in Northward America) has three.4 Ω primary resistance. Ideal for use with 4- and 6-cylinder Hot Spark ignition kits.

The following 12-volt Bosch coils should be uniform with the Hot-Spark electronic ignition module (four-and half-dozen-cylinder):

00 015
0 221 119 021 (Bosch Black scroll)
0 221 119 020 (Bosch Blackness coil) (VW 022 905 115C)
0 221 119 027 (Bosch Bluish coil) (VW 043 905 115C)
9 220 081 039 (Bosch, Brazil)
nine 220 081 054 (Bosch, Brazil)
9 220 081 083 (00 012) (Bosch Bluish coil)
nine 224 771 008 (Bosch Blackness curl)
0 439 051 15C (00012) (Bosch Silvery Roll)

9 224 771 008 (Bosch Blackness roll) - Platonic for 4- and 6-cyl Hot Spark ignition kits

The Bosch coils above should accept a primary winding with 3.0 to iii.iii Ω resistance. Bosch coils are fabricated in a number of countries, with varying amounts of primary and secondary resistance. It'due south best to check the coil's principal resistance with an Ohmmeter (a digital multi meter in the 200 Ω mode). Install a 1.4 Ω or so external anchor resistor (HS14BR) between the coil'due south + terminal and the blood-red HotSpark ignition module's ruby wire, if the coil'southward main resistance is questionable or borderline.

Bosch 0 221 119 030 (Bosch Crimson Coil, Brazil) 1.6 Ω to 1.8 Ω primary resistance (OK for 8-cylinder ignition kits, not enough primary resistance for 4- and 6-cylinder ignition kits).

Lucas Gyre Primary Resistance:
DLB102 1.5 Ω (oil-filled) - (8-cyl-only)
DLB110 1.5 Ω (oil-filled) - (eight-cyl-merely)
DLB105 3.0 Ω (oil-filled) - (iv- and vi-cyl)
DLB101 three.0 Ω (oil-filled) - (4- and six-cyl)

Flame-Thrower (made in Communist china) Coil Primary Resistance:
40001 1.five Ω (oil-filled) - (viii-cyl-only)
40011 ane.5 Ω (oil-filled) - (8-cyl-simply)
40111 one.5 Ω (epoxy-filled) - (8-cyl-only)
40501 3.0 Ω (oil-filled) - (4- and 6-cyl)
40511 iii.0 Ω (oil-filled) - (4- and 6-cyl)
40611 3.0 Ω (epoxy-filled) - (four- and 6-cyl)
Do not use whatsoever other Flame-Thrower coil, every bit information technology won't accept plenty primary resistance, allowing too much amperage to menstruum to the ignition module, destroying the module or shortening its life.

Commonly-Available Coils:
Duralast (Autozone) LU800 iii.3 Ω primary resistance, eight.3K Ω secondary resistance (oil-filled) - (four- and 6-cyl)
Wells LU800 iii.three Ω master resistance, viii.3K Ω secondary resistance (oil-filled) - (4- and 6-cyl)
Import Direct 23-0254 three.two Ω principal resistance, secondary resistance: 7.8K Ω - (4- and 6-cyl)

Duralast (Autozone) C838 1.5 Ω primary resistance, secondary resistance: 8K Ω - (8-cyl-but)
Duralast (Autozone) C819 1.5 Ω chief resistance, secondary resistance: 9.95K Ω - (8-cyl-simply)
Borg-Warner E70 1.5 Ω principal resistance, secondary resistance: 9.35K Ω - (8-cyl-only)
Wells C819 1.5 Ω master resistance, secondary resistance: 9.95K Ω - (viii-cyl-only)
Masterpro 2-5195 1.5 Ω master resistance, secondary resistance: 11.37K Ω - (eight-cyl-merely)

Measuring C oil Primary Resistance: 4-Cylinder: Coil must accept a minimum of 3 Ohms chief resistance. 8-Cylinder: Coil must have between 1.5 Ohms and 2.0 Ohms primary resistance. To measure principal resistance: Label and remove all wires to gyre ( + or - ). Using a common digital multimeter in the 200 Ω style, cross the red and black leads of the Ohmmeter. Allow a few seconds for the reading to settle and write down the reading.

Nonetheless in the 200 Ohm fashion, measure out between coils + and - terminals. Allow a few seconds for the reading to settle, until it stabilizes. Subtract the previous reading, taken with the leads crossed, to recoup for multimetersouth inherent resistance. Exercise non utilise a low-resistance curl, such equally the MSD or Accel coil; they dont have enough master resistance for this application. Using a curlicue with too little primary resistance tin can cause the ignition module to overheat and misfire until it cools downwards again or fails, voiding the warranty.

Ohmmeter Scale: When the Ohmmetersouth red and blackness leads are connected to each other, the reading should exist 0.00 or very close to zero. If, though, for instance, with both Ohmmeter leads shorted together, the reading is 0.v Ω, you lotll need to decrease 0.5 Ω from the reading you go when measuring the coildue south principal resistance. For case, if the scrolls primary resistance reading is 3.5 Ω, just when the Ohmmeter leads are shorted together the reading is 0.5 Ω, then the coils main resistance is 3.0 Ω: three.5 Ω - 0.5 Ω = 3.0 Ω. This calibration procedure applies only to resistance measurements made in the 200 Ω mode of a digital Ohmmeter.

The inherent resistance of the leads is negligible in higher Ω modes of the Ohmmeter. If you lotre using an analog Ohmmeter, touch the leads together while setting the needle on zero before measuring resistance.

Measuring Ringlet Secondary Resistance: For all-time functioning, coil should have 7K Ohms or more secondary resistance. To measure out secondary resistance: Characterization and remove all wires to scroll ( + or - ). Using a common digital multimeter in the 20K Ω fashion, place i Ohmmeter lead on the coil'due south + or - terminal and the other Ohmmeter lead in the coil's middle high-tension wire socket, the socket that holds the atomic number 82 from the center of the coil to the center of distributor cap.

Check the voltage reading at the coil'south + last, engine running, at maximum RPM at the coil's positive terminal. If the voltage reading is more than than 13.9 volts at whatsoever RPM level, the voltage regulator likely needs replacing and/or a i.iv Ohm ballast resistor should be wired between the scroll's + terminal and the red Hot Spark ignition wire. Too much voltage can damage the ignition module and other electronic components. The ballast resistor is usually mounted on the firewall or directly on the whorl. Charging system voltage of 13.0 volts or and then is plenty.

Ohmmeter Calibration: When the Ohmmetersouth red and black leads are connected to each other, the reading should exist 0.00 or very close to zero. If, though, for case, with both Ohmmeter leads shorted together, the reading is 0.5 Ω, you lotll need to subtract 0.v Ω from the reading you lot get when measuring the coils primary resistance. For example, if the coils primary resistance reading is 3.five Ω, only when the Ohmmeter leads are shorted together the reading is 0.5 Ω, so the coils primary resistance is 3.0 Ω: iii.5 Ω - 0.5 Ω = 3.0 Ω. This calibration procedure applies only to resistance measurements made in the 200 Ω mode of a digital Ohmmeter.

The inherent resistance of the leads is negligible in higher Ω modes of the Ohmmeter. If yousre using an analog Ohmmeter, touch the leads together while setting the needle on zippo before measuring resistance.
